Home Gardening and Farming

Article by Nazima Woozeer

Producing your own food in your own garden at home is a year round project. With proper planning and utilization of the techniques for canning, freezing, and storing your home grown food, it is possible to eat healthful, organic food that you have produce all twelve months of the year. If your planning your first garden, the initial step is turning over the sod and preparing a seed bed. A small garden can be turned by hoe and with a spade. Simply dig into the sod and turn it over so that grass is buried into the earth. A more effective way of preparing the garden is with a roto tillers, a powerful operated machine that drains through the soil, mixing the soil with the earth and this is the easy and fast type of home farming since you will use a machine that speeds up the process.

A successful garden depends, first and foremost on the condition of the soil. Good soil is always rich in humus, which conserve moisture and makes the necessary mineral nutrients available to the plant. Good soil should be living soil and friable with lots of organic matter in various stages of decay mixed throughout. Soil differ depending on locale and past usage. In most areas, the local agricultural office will analyze your soil and tell you what it needs.

Planting a home garden on the level affords a more even distribution of water, while on raised beds the rain or hose water runs off from plants that may need it. Other situations that are high, warm and day are more adoptable to forcing early vegetables. In low, moist areas which crops as cabbage, late cucumbers and onions should be grown. The presence of a large number on insect pests, which feed on plant foliage and damage vegetables and fruits, is often a symptom of improperly balance soil. Good soil management is their best control. Soil that lacks humus and the essential plants minerals provides weak, unhealthy plants that attract insect and disease. So using an insecticide should be implemented. Through nearly all plants can be grown in the open many crops must be started indoors, or in hotbeds or cold frames, otherwise they cannot reach maturity in a single season. Enough plants of tomato, eggplants, melon, pepper, cabbage, broccoli, cauli flower, and lettuce can be started well before soil is ready.

Watering is also a vital part when it comes to a good home gardening, whether your sprinkle or use over hand irrigation or an open house, one thorough soaking a week is more effective than a light daily sprinkling. Shallow watering tends to keep root growth near the surface. Thoroughly wetting induces deep downward root growth and strider, thought resisting plants. In using open hose let water to avoid washing out soil.

Small Vegetable Garden Plans For a Home Garden

Planting a small vegetable garden is almost as much fun as harvesting. Can’t you just taste the plump juicy tomatoes and the sweet tasting cantaloupe? Before you grow the area’s largest pumpkin or zesty collards, and are short on space and time, take a look at some creative small vegetable garden plans.

Square Foot Gardening–A Space Saving Plan

Intensive planting designs use every bit of garden space available. Square foot gardens (4 ft. by 4 ft.)are surprisingly productive. How many plants planted in each square foot is decided by the amount of room necessary for the specific crop planted to successfully produce a harvest.

For illustration, each single square in a square foot garden plan can contain 1-staked tomato, 4 bean plants, 1 pepper plant, or 50 radishes. Positioning of plants or seeds inside the square also depends on the crop selection.

Where a single plant occupies a square, set the seed or transplant in the middle to allow room to grow in all directions.

Several plants may be planted in rows, smaller squares, or at random in small vegetable garden plans. For instance, fill a square with four bean plants, divide the area into smaller squares and plant one seed in the middle of each. A square can hold fifty radishes or twenty onions. The seeds can be scattered across the square or sown in small rows.

Harvest early by thinning out young plants for use as tender greens or roots, creating room for the rest to grow. Trellises add a third dimension to small vegetable garden plans. A trellis is useful to gardeners seeking to maximize space. Rather than allowing vine crops to sprawl across the garden, send plants such as cantaloupe, watermelon, and cucumbers growing skyward.

Cages also can be used to take advantage of vertical space and keep crops from sprawling over the ground.

Many plants can be successfully grown in cages, including tomatoes, watermelons, and eggplants. In addition to space-saving planting techniques, gardeners have an additional resource: dwarf varieties and bush forms of plants that originally grew only as vines.

Be advised, while the dwarf varieties take up less garden room, the harvests are somewhat smaller than their full size relatives. Geometric planting patterns make maximum use of space in small vegetable garden plans. Gardeners use simple designs to fill wide beds with vegetables. As they say, necessity is the mother of invention.

Vegetable spacing for small plots

Beans are a sure producer and should be spaced four plants per square foot in small vegetable garden plans. Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, peppers, and eggplant may need staking and space 1 plant each square ft. Cabbage and cauliflower produces a single head planted at one to a foot. Trellis or stake tomatoes at one plant per sq. ft. Make successive plantings of endive, kohlrabi, and lettuce, at four plants per square foot. Harvest individual leaves of kale and parsley spacing four plants per sq. feet.

A single stake will support floppy, low growing plants that might otherwise be injured by winds or abundant productions. A wire cage gives the best support for tall growing plants.

Don’t think just because you have small vegetable garden plans that means not much of a harvest. Vegetable gardening even on a smaller scale can produce bumper crops. In fact, with vertical gardening, the sky is the limit!

There are many more great plans and ideas for all types of vegetable gardening, (including indoor gardening), available for free on my website.

Home Gardening and the Rewards of Home Gardening

Article by Claude Oconnor

Home gardening is a quite Green activity, and is really fantastic for the surroundings aiding reducing pollution amounts in numerous communities. It is also a way to conserve income, and eat more healthy meals.Economically speaking the resurgence of residence farming could have an impact on producers of food, that usually supplied a lot more wealthier householders with their fruit and vegetables. Quite a few of these goods had been imported from creating Nations, or in the scenario of Europe, new poorer members of the European Union. There is no doubt that property gardening tends to make sense, we had been dependent on factory farms that usually utilized pesticides that had been potentially linked to illnesses in a lot of western Countries. Some of the solutions we ate, had been portion of the Globalization of agriculture, which includes importing poultry from Thailand.Countries that may well be hit by the new trend of home gardening, could be Thailand, that is dependent mostly on agriculture, Slovenia and Poland, each exporters to the EU. Whilst flower gardens are turned into vegetable, and fruit patches, and property owners purchase chickens, instead than obtain eggs from our supermarkets.Getting green out of economic necessity, is a trend we all could have to experience in the potential, as land may well get started to grow to be scarcer due to the fact of growing sea amounts, and our awareness of eating far more wholesome meals, turns us away from far more unhealthier factory farming create.Even so, like every little thing in this age of globalization, other individuals have been co-dependent on us for getting their foods. And the large organizations that developed the veggies, eggs and poultry for us, are in all probability laying off employees, and reconsidering had been they can uncover new markets, to a new era of residence gardeners and home gardening.

Essentials in Home Garden Design

Article by Kenny

Working on your own garden is more fun and more practical instead of hiring landscape artists and gardeners to give your yard a new and inviting look. All you need are some creativity and great love for gardening. However, there are some dangers too in having no background in gardening or having little knowledge about it. Instead of achieving the best look that you want, you end up regretting changing the way your front or backyard looks.

Plan, Plan, Plan

So as to avoid mistakes, careful planning is essential in designing your garden. Many gardens are haphazardly made so gardeners are not able to sustain their verdant and colorful look. Apart from the arrangement of the plants and the ornaments, you should also plan what plants, shrubs and flowers to use. There are certain plants that grow only in a particular season so if you would plant only those in your garden, for the rest of the year your garden would be good as dead. Make sure to include perennial plants as these live longer and when cut, they continue to blossom and grow.

Plant for Autumn

Don’t miss out the natural beauty of autumn season by not planting enough autumn plants with very colorful leaves. You might be thinking of planting plants that bloom during spring and summer seasons by now. Though they’ll make your garden lovely during these times of the year, they’ll similarly make your garden dull during autumn and winter seasons as their flowers wither. Planting autumn shrubs and vines such as burning bush, Virginia creeper, red chokeberry, Viking black chokeberry and fothergilla will make your garden more exciting during fall.

Also, include in your planning the location of your garden. You should situate your garden on a flat area in your yard and not on a steep slope to avoid erosion during rainy days. It would be best to build a stone retaining wall. Use real stones for a more natural effect.

Have Some Plants for WinterA lot of home gardens are left dead during the snowy winter months. This is because the owners did not plant trees, shrubs and other plants that shall make your winter days lively and just as exciting as summer and springtime. Aside from evergreens and conifer trees, you can also try shrubs with colorful berries that keep the birds around and trees with dramatic branching patterns such as cranberry bush viburnum, birch trees, bayberry and evergreen holly shrubs.

Irrigation System

A good irrigation system is a key to maintaining a colorful and verdant garden. You may not be always around to water the plants yourself so you should also have an irrigation system that would provide sufficient water to your plants.

Balance Aesthetics with Functionality

Although looks matter, you should not take for granted the functionality and the safety of your garden design. Make sure that the plants do not block or mess with the pathways, especially if you have children and pets in the house. Also, if you plan to hold special family gatherings in that garden, have enough lawn space where you can hold social gatherings.

Don’t you know that you can also save energy by designing your garden well? If you plant evergreen trees to the northern or western part of the house, these trees may work well as windbreaks and so you can save on heating expenses.

A Hydroponics System For The Home Gardener

Article by Wayne Hemrick

Home gardeners are an avid lot, and you may be at the point where you have filled up all possible planting spots in your back, side and front yards. Never daunted, home gardeners turn to indoor gardening to give them even more ways to enjoy plants. For an excellent way to grow indoor plants, many home gardeners turn to hydroponic systems to expand their indoor growing capabilities. Of course, hydroponic systems also allow those with no soil in which to plant, such as those in urban areas or living in apartments, to enjoy gardening at home as well.

A hydroponics system consists of a few key components. Because growing plants hydroponically means that they are grown in water rather than soil, a hydroponics system will need some type of reservoir to hold the water for the plants. The crowns of the plants will need to be suspended over the water and thus some mechanism for this will be needed in a hydroponics system. This varies depending on the hydroponics system that you choose, but might be some type of netting, or a plastic tray with one or more holes cut out of it, either of which allows the plants’ roots to dangle below and into the water and the crowns of the plants to remain safely above water. Some type of a pump is needed to raise the water level up to the plant roots.

In addition, you will need some additional hydroponic gardening supplies such as plant nutrient, which is a water-soluble plant food needed for hydroponically grown plants, as well as lights for the plants. Plants also need light for photosynthesis and growth, and thus indoor gardeners will use a grow light for this purpose. A grow light may be an LED, HID or other type of strong light. The important aspect of the lights for your hydroponics system is that it needs to produce light in the spectrum that plants need for optimal growth: red/orange spectrum light for when they are mature and you want them to fruit or flower, or blue spectrum light for when they are small and growing vegetation, and to mimic as closely as possible natural sunlight. Certain lights that work well in a hydroponics system are available that offer a full color spectrum, so if you get those you will be covered no matter in which stage of growth your plants are. If you choose a HID light, the light will also need a digital ballast, which controls the electrical current that flows to the light bulb. You will also need additional hydroponic gardening supplies such as a reflector, which helps to increase the area of light. Air cooling systems are also needed because many types of light systems also create heat.

More information is available about hydroponic systems and hydroponic gardening supplies online from hydroponic discount suppliers.

Harmonious Outdoor Living; Beyond Home & Garden

A new lifestyle trend that you will see in most architectural or interior magazine is outdoor living. As a homeowner I am sure you have seen the articles and have died to start renovating. If trends are anything to go by, the main living space in your home, no longer needs to be indoors. In fact in our new environmentally conscious psyche, it is imperative that it not be. A well thought outdoor living area can often be the most used space for your family. It can also greatly appreciate the price of your property as a value addition.
If you plan to seriously indulge in a lifestyle, which involves outdoor living one of the things you will have to consider is security and privacy measures for this area. Whether you choose an intimate privacy fence or secured fencing, privacy is a major factor as youll want to keep your outdoor living area warm & inviting, yet private. Selections of privacy fences may include those made from wood, metal, plastic, stone, wrought iron, etc. You may also consider constructing large pergolas, trellises and other screens to provide privacy to your garden and outdoor living area.
Furniture will, of course, play a large part in your outdoor living area. There are many types of outdoor furniture and garden furniture available. Buy outdoor furniture that is comfortable, comes in the pieces that you desire and within your budget. Its always a nice idea to browse the outdoor furniture department when youre looking for home and garden supplies. Take time to browse at whats available so youll know what you want when the time comes to buy.
Lighting in your outdoor living space is crucial because it creates a nice ambiance and allows you to use your outdoor living area at night. Candles and fire pots can be very romantic as well as using tiki torches and outdoor fire pits. Using solar lights in your garden is also an option versus outdoor lighting that requires electrical installation. Either of these lighting options will probably be located in the lawn and garden supplies area.
The two most important tips that you should keep in mind before embarking on this project is the amount of garden space that is available and your budget. When it comes to the amount of space, be sure to consider ample room for each seating area. Make sure theres plenty of elbow room for each seat and if there is a focal point in your outdoor living area, try to incorporate the seating near the focal point or in plain view. Make the area warm and cozy. If your budget only allows you to purchase a few things at a time, be sure that all the garden furniture you want can be purchased at different times and that it is a stock item. If you need to purchase items at separate times, see if the store allows for layaways. This way, you can get everything you want but pay for all the pieces of outdoor garden furniture at different times.
With a little thought and planning for your outdoor living area, you can create a magical area for you to enjoy and within a budget that you can afford.

Simple Way to Pick Garden Statues

Choosing the right garden statue means finding a statue that fits your garden style, complements both garden and home, and is in proportion to the landscape around it. Garden statues are strong focal points in the garden, meaning that they immediately draw the viewer’s gaze into the garden to rest upon the statue.

1. Before racing to the garden center or calling the catalog company and ordering a statue that caught your eye, look at your garden like a stranger would look at it. To help you get perspective, take several digital photographs of the garden from different angles. Load these onto your computer and review them.

2. What’s your style?
What do you notice about your garden? Is it informal, with a cottage-style feel to it? Or do you have brick or stone pathways in straight lines to the front door of your home, with neat, symmetrical plantings? This may indicate a more formal style.Determine your own personal style, based on review of your photos and on your home’s architecture.

3. A backdrop such as this could take a large statue.
Look again at the pictures. Where do you want to place your statue? Think about the backdrop for the piece. Many statues are placed in areas surrounded by green, such as against a backdrop of trees, shrubs or ferns. This adds a focal point in an otherwise monotone area.

4. Next, begin browsing catalogs or take a trip to your local garden center to view the statues for sale. Some will seem right, while others seem ridiculous for your garden. Make a list of what appeals to you but don’t buy one just yet.

5. Consider materials when choosing a statue. Concrete lasts a long time, and weathers nicely, but it is heavy, so large statues may need to be delivered and placed for you, which adds to the cost. Metal may need special installation. Plastic and plastic composites can look just like stone but can be much lighter and easier to move around if you don’t like the spot you’ve selected. The lightweight material, however, also means they can blow over unless weighted with sand or another material in the base. Each type has pros and cons, so consider them carefully.

6. Add only one piece to your garden at a time. Too many elements may make your garden look like a yard sale. Too many elements of conflicting style are just confusing to the eye. Select pieces harmonious to your garden and home style, and add only a little at a time. Like women who wear too much flashy jewelry, too many garden accessories can look overdone!
