Saving Money during a Kitchen Renovation
The enormous cost of undertaking a kitchen remodel leaves many just making due with their old kitchen. The costs seem to mount quickly leaving homeowners wondering if they’ll ever be able to have their dream kitchen. The fact is remodeling a kitchen does not have to be overly expensive with just a few tips.
The first thing to do is make a plan. Write out everything that will need to be done. Set a budget for the whole project, and then a budget for each part of the renovation. With this list made, it is possible to decide what a homeowner will take on, and which items will need a professional hired.
Enormous costs can be saved when dealing with suppliers for appliances. Appliances can be purchased “like new” from second hand stores. Many would be surprised to find out, that most appliances bought from a second hand store, have a warranty. Savings can also be found by shopping a ding and dent sale. Many times the dents or mars in the surface are barely noticeable, or at the back of the appliance where no one sees it anyway. Do research online to find out the real value of the appliance before going into the store to negotiate. Be prepared to walk away if the deal wanted, is not what is being offered.
When hiring a contractor, be sure that they will allow materials chosen, not by them to be used. Talk it over in detail, making sure the contract says such before signing. Also make sure they will allow taking on any other task, such as painting that can be done without a professional. Carefully going over every detail can seem time consuming, but saves thousands of dollars in the long run. Be sure though, not to take on any tasks you are not qualified for. Calling in an electrician come in afterward, to fix mistakes is often more costly then just paying a professional in the first place.
Time is valuable too. Be aware of time spent taking on the task that takes an amateur months to finish, that could have been done in a weekend with a professional. Factor in the cost of having the kitchen out of service for that many weeks. Careful planning can save a lot of money, allowing the dream kitchen to become a reality, many did not believe was possible.
